Today we decided to do something new. We asked the children to do something new at home and they decided to do that with color and we wanted to do something related to Easter, since these past days we celebrated that in Peru. Before that we shared with each other what Easter means for us and how this day is celebrated in different countries. Luckily we got the visit of friends who come from Spain, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands and Peru. They told us a little bit about this tradition in their countries and the local volunteers told us how they celebrate in their regions, since one of them comes from Huancayo (a region in the center of Peru).

Once we finished our conversation, the answer for this day was there: We are going to put some paint in eggs and hit the wall. So we did it. We grabbed eggs and filled them with paint. Everybody wanted to be the first one to hit the wall. We started form the smallest. There they were, splashing the wall with paint and smiles.
At the end we’ve got a colorful wall, but we know that we need to do it again to make our piece of art complete.

This Sunday April 9th, a group of multinational artists paid us a visit. Gonzalo (Argentina), Jorge and Gabriel(Costa Rica) and Anahí (Peru) came to share their Art. And how did they do that? Well, by making us laugh. They began their performance at 3:07 o’clock, because the last guests came a little bit later than planned. Yes, we invited 50 children and most of them were curious asking us what it was about, some of them even half an hour before we opened the doors of Pachachaca.

The living room was already prepared, a half-moon drawn by the chairs. The light of the sun fell exactly on the place where our visitors were supposed to act. Suddenly, Gonzalo came into the room through the main door wearing a pair of big shoes and a funny tiny hat. From the opposite side of the room Jorge and Fabiáncame up making funny sounds with special musical instruments. Finally, Anahi completed the quartet when she appeared right behind the public by whispering her short story.

So they gave us a special present. From short stories, jokes, mime acts and jogging till playing “weird” musical instruments, they made us laugh the whole afternoon. At the end we were singing and playing together. Thank you guys for all your good vibes and the joy you gave us!

Making Soaps

Handmade soaps can be used in our own homes to enable us to outsource our needs less and less, and also make wonderful gifts. This year we’ve already made our own soaps in three occasions.

This Saturday we invited Alicia, a Spanish teacher who knows the process to make homemade soap very well. She came early in the morning and taught the children the importance of using our resources and being aware about our impact on the environment.

Since we have several children running around our house all day, and especially on Saturdays, the idea of making soap was a nice way to keep them busy while they were learning practical skills for their lives.
At the end, the result was amazing. After a few days the children of Pachachaca were using their own homemade soaps and the children of the neighborhood received a piece to be used at home!

Every Saturday the neighborhood children come to Pachachaca to participate in different activities. Today we painted stones that they have chosen from the river. We used gouache and the pieces of Art that they created were amazing. These activities are the result of cooperation between the teachers of Pachachaca and a group of devoted local volunteers, many of whom worked on the summer camp this year.

These activities are based on the creative process of art and have a low barrier to entry (anyone can be creative in some form or another). This type of work can be especially beneficial to children as younger people are usually less capable and less comfortable expressing themselves via words.

For many children, painting is a way to stimulate their talent and imagination, and in doing so they are able to express their ideas and vision. We encourage them to do that by let them tell stories and memories.
